For people who compare Disney to Key West.

 A dream before dawn today had me pondering getting involved in something undefined going on in Key West and I told people in the dream I wanted to stay out of it. But on waking and finding myself tagged with this below, by a distant cousin in Kentucky, at the top of my Facebook timeline, I simply could not resist.

    Sloan Bashinsky I lived in Key West and on Little Torch Key, about 26 miles above, for a long time. Visiting there is one thing. Living there is something else. Subscribe to the Key West Citizen for a month (keysnews.com) and read it daily, including the Citizen's Voice section. Know the reef is about 95 percent dead. Causes under debate, but over-development silt and human sewage dumped into the ground/water table and directly into the littoral waters and even through pipes offshore, did plenty of damage. As do the mammoth cruise ships, which litter Old Town Key West with thousands of day visitors. The coastal waters are full of MRSA flesh-eating bacteria, a true home-grown terrorist, fatal, if not treated, and resistant to antibiotics and very difficult for medicine to cure today. The local politics are wonderful entertainment, if you have a gallows sense of humor. I ran 6 times for mayor of Key West, 3 times for county commission, 1 time for school board. Didn't break sweat not getting elected. Most of the people living in Key West descend from, immigrants from the Bahamas (white and black), the American mainland, Cuba, south of the American border, Eastern Europe, Asia. Key West is an international city. A microcosm of America itself. Hang out in Key West a while, talk with enough people there, you will learn everything about America you wanted, or didn't want, to know. It's said there are more bars and churches, per capita, in Key West, than any other city. You can get just about any drug you want, besides booze, in Key West. Key West friends told me just about everyone they knew there used drugs. They did not mean booze, without which Key West would dry up and blow away. Lots of funky, memorable people in Key West. Lots of artists, writers, poets, artisans, street performers, homeless people, religious and political junkies. Rents sky high. Housing costs sky high. The tree canopy is lovely in the older parts of the city. Lots of interesting museums. Four play houses. Lower Duval Street is where the nighttime action is. The sin strip. Walk away from arguments there, if you wish to remain among the living. My favorite breakfast place is Harpoon Harry's. 50's decor diner, great wait staff, music, ambiance. Good food, reasonable prices. Beer, wine and liquor. Water sports still attractive, but don't go into the water with a shaving nick or cut on your skin, or you could end up with MRSA. Lodging rates sky high, especially during cooler months. Don't come during Spring Break. US 1 motor traffic from mainland to Key West can be nightmarish. Motor traffic congestion and parking space shortages and parking meter rates extreme in Old Town Key West. Arrive and walk, rent a bicycle or use city transit buses, cabs or Uber to get around town. Maybe 20 percent of the adult population is LGBTQ. Key West votes Democrat, usually, the rest of the Keys, Republican. Best chance to meet a hurricane is July through October. I think the best time to visit is November and May.

      • Sloan Bashinsky Denise Moore Cherry Gosh, Denise. Below is the text of an email response from long time Key West resident Rick Boettger. He lives in what is called The Meadows. He is well known in Key West. Has written many pieces for the blue paper (Key West the Newspaper - thebluepaper.com) and other local newspapers. Is a member in good standing of the local Resistance. Has taken wayward elected officials to task in Key West and Tallahassee. Before moving away from Key West last fall, I rented a studio apartment in the home of my good friends, Naja and Arnaud Girard, who published the blue paper. We talked about Key West all the time. The good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly. Anyway, here is Rick's feedback on what I responded to your comparison of Key West to Disney. There is no comparison. Not even in the same solar system, those two tourist attractions.

        I've compared Key West not to Disney, but a combo of Club Med and Nantucket (the Club Med of the '70's, when I went--I don't know what it's like now).
